‘05 F-150 with the 4.6 V8 (One of my favorite engines of all time.) Were these reliable? I remember my favorite car in Ford Racing 3 on the Ps2 was a yellow one.

In my experience, the 4.6 leaves a lot to be desired. But it's perfectly adequate and reliable for doing truck stuff.

Yup, the power output is a bit meh.
I wouldn’t be towing though, so lack of power isn’t a concern to me.

For some reason I believe they are more reliable then the 5.4 but I have no first hand experience. I’ve only ever heard of the 5.4 losing valves, camshafts and spark plugs.

You can't go too far wrong with an F-series. The 4.6 tends to get exhaust leaks, so listen for a ticking from around there.

They’re more reliable than the 5.4 and less leaky than the 4.2. Plus share the same tranny as the Exploder and the Crown Vic variants, so there’s like 10000000000 parts out there.
I drive a 4.2 with 168k miles and it runs like brand new. I’ve seen 4.6s with 400k miles still going strong.
The body will rust out before the drivetrain dies.

Price is pretty good, too.

No doubt that they’re super reliable. I’ve seen Panthers with 700k on them, still doing fine.
Same tranny as the Exploder and Crown Vic is a major plus. Tons of those out there....

If you want a reliable truck? That will fill the void decently. The price isn’t too bad either.
But, keep in mind, these trucks are built like shit, drive like shit, have zero power with the 4.6, and don’t really offer too much, IMO.
I’d get a Silverado of the same vintage, if you are asking my opinion.

The F series of that era is basically a tall panther with different gearing =)

Too much $$$ for a Silverado.
If driving one is like driving a Wrangler, I’m fine with that.

Das is good

Much more so than the 5.4L anyway. These aren’t screwed together all that well though. Expect to lose things like trim pieces and window switches, but the drivetrain should be OK. A buddy of mine used his to move from upstate NY to Albuquerque and got there without any drama so that's an endorsement of some sort.

Also, I didn’t realize you could still get the 4.6 with a stick as late as 2005. I don’t think I’ve seen in person an F-150 stick shift newer than 2002 that wasn’t a V6. That’s a pretty cool combination that I would snap up in a hurry.
Edit: I've had a long day. Just saw that it's an auto and the picture I thought was the shifter was the 4wd selector.

How much do you have to spend? You can find s comparable Silverado or Sierra for only a little bit more.
Eh, kinda. I don’t mind it in a Wrangler though. I have two buddies with 4.6 Triton F150s: One is a POS ‘98 that is a freaking terrible money pit, and the other one is a ‘05 that’s lifted with some 33s (or 35s, idk). Both are gutless in every imaginable way. In my opinion, all of the F150s from ‘97-’14 just feel like tin cans posing as trucks. That’s why I love the new F150 so much. It escaped the trend.

$6,000 for a non-rustbucket with under 150,000 miles if I’m going for a gas engine. Every silverado in that price range I’ve seen is a complete piece.

Yeah, you’re right there. Guess I haven’t really looked at those in a while. I’d probably still rather have a rustier Silverado than an F150, but it you choose to go the F150 route, it shouldn’t treat you too badly.

I’d rather just not have rust at all and an engine that I’m more familiar with.

Damn that's one of those too good to be true prices. Under 160k and its 4x4 and its $6000. Pick that sucker up

Sketchy dealer in Jersey though,
I did see quite a few others priced similarly though.

Serious question - you want for $7k and keep asking how reliable things are... Have you looked at a 1st-gen Tundra V8 4x4?

I've looked into them, I don't like the styling one bit though, and a lot of them had rust issues.

I believe from ‘04 on they mostly fixed the rust issues, but yep, they are a bit homely. That’s probably as good of a reason as any.

Theyre good trucks, I just don’t like how they look. Interior and exterior.
![]() 04/27/2016 at 22:24 |

Can you believe that the Sienna had pretty much the same interior style all the way through 2010? I had a 2009 Seinna as a rental once in 2010 and it was like time traveling back to 1998.

, those things rattled like nobody’s business also.
I also remeber that the sliding doors used to freeze shut and then try to open themselves the entire time spent in the car until they unfroze haha. I know at least two people that had that issue.

last year for the 4.6 I think. after that they went to just 5.4. I had a 4.6 in my 97 and it had 190,000 when I sold it to my cousin and he is still driving it

Nah, if you are concerned on the motor, I’d take a 5.3 Vortec over any of the Ford motors at the time. It’s just as (if not more) reliable than the 4.6 Triton, and makes WAY more power.
If it’s rust you’re worried about, though, I can definitely understand that.

This is the 4.6 though, the type from Crown Vic’s and others. The kind that are very hard to kill and regularly go over 400k.
![]() 04/28/2016 at 10:30 |
|
Yeah, I know. 5.3 Vortecs easily go over 300k and have way more grunt than 4.6s.

The later 3v 4.6 blows the 2v 4.6 they put in the 2005 F-150 out of the water. Problem is Ford decided to wait until 2009 to out it in the F-series. Meanwhile it was out in 2005 in the Mustang and 06 in the Explorer.
09s are going for a lot more than your allotted budget....

Like most people have mentioned, the 4.6 is a little gutless, but reliable. I’ve been in quite a few of these and I’m not sure where all the poor quality hate is coming from. The several that I’ve been have been put together and held up well. Just as well as, if not better than any GM of the day and the horrific thin cheap plastic that they used everywhere . Overall I say good trucks, nothing spectacular, but dependable, rugged trucks.

motor longevity
doesnt means something when the truck is falling apart
